Chapter Ten
SLOAN’S HAND TENSED in mine as my phone vibrated on the table. I released her hand to pick it up and look at the screen. “That’s weird. It’s the jail in Asheville.”
She groaned. “I have a bad feeling about this.”
I tapped the answer button with my thumb. “McNamara.”
“Nathan, it’s Sheriff Davis.” His voice had an irritated edge I’d come to recognize.
“Good evening, Sheriff. How can I help you?”
“Have you misplaced one of your people?”
My brow crumpled. “Not that I’m aware of, sir.”
“You’re not missing Damon Claymore or his brother? Sloan’s husband or boyfriend or whatever he is?”
My blood ran cold. Damon Claymore was Azrael. And his “brother,” as the world knew him, was Warren.
“No, sir. I told you, Damon and Warren were killed overseas in the spring—”
“Nathan, I like you, but cut the bullshit. I didn’t buy that cockamamy story when you told it the first time, and I’m certainly not buying it now. One of them is behind bars in my jail. Saw him with my very own eyes not five minutes ago.”
“Which one, Sheriff?”
“Hell, I don’t know. They look so much alike, and I only met them once or twice a very long time ago.”
“Can’t you ask?”
“He don’t know who he is. Or he says he don’t, anyway. Can you come down here and identify the son of a bitch so I can properly press charges?”
“Press charges for what?”
“He was brought in Tuesday night after being found staggering down the street in the rain. After refusing to cooperate with the officer and give his identity, he was booked in as a John Doe.”
“Didn’t you run his prints?” I asked.
“Who are you talking to? Of course we ran his prints. Nothing came up, which I find very interesting given his profession. How do you explain that?”
“I honestly don’t know, Sheriff.” And that was the truth. I’d stopped trying to use human rules to define the angelic a long time ago.
“Well, he’s been sitting in a cell all weekend until he swung on one of my deputies tonight. That’s when I got involved. Low and behold, he’s one of your crew. Surprise, surprise.”
My brain went into cop mode. Calculated. Methodical. Inquisitive.
Tuesday night was when Iliana got sick.
“Where was he found?” I asked.
Papers rustled in the background. “Macon Avenue.”
Sloan lived on Macon Avenue.
“Can you come in or not?”
“Sheriff, I’m in Raleigh for the holiday, but we’ll head home tonight.”
“What about Sloan? Can she come down?”
“She’s with me, sir, but I’ll send someone from our office.”
“Excellent.”
“How much is his bond?”
“I would’ve let him go on his own recognizance until he put my boy’s life in danger. They’re doing his paperwork now for the new assault charge, so I’d expect the bond to be set around twenty-five thousand.”
We kept some cash in a safe at Echo-5, but I doubted it’d be enough to cover it.
“Sheriff, can you email me his booking report?”
“Yeah. We’ll send it over. Your personal email address still the same?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Stand by.”
“Thank you, Sheriff. If it is our guy, I’m sorry about all this.
